What should I do if I have a toothache?
Possible causes of a toothache include decay, an abscessed tooth, cracked tooth, a damaged dental restoration (such as a filling or crown), teeth grinding (bruxism), and gum disease (periodontitis).
If you experience a toothache, you can rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. A cold compress placed outside the mouth or on your cheek may help with any swelling. Use dental floss or a soft toothbrush to gently remove any food caught in between the teeth. You may also choose to use some over-the-counter medication for quick pain relief. If the pain persists, call us for an emergency appointment.

My tooth has been knocked out. What should I do?
Call us immediately on (08) 8472 8905.
If the tooth is undamaged, we may be able to save it. Here are a few care instructions for saving a knocked-out tooth:
— Pick up the tooth by the crown (that’s the top part that sits above the gumline, not the root).
— Clean the tooth (rinse it in either milk or water).
— Gently place the tooth back in the socket.
— Hold the tooth in place with a finger or by gently biting down on a soft, clean cloth or piece of clothing.
— If you can’t reposition the tooth back in the socket, place it in a small cup of milk or hold it in your mouth (next to your cheek)
— Visit your emergency dentist ASAP—ideally within 30 minutes.

Should I go to the hospital for a dental emergency?
Hospitals do have emergency dentists on hand. And, in serious dental emergencies it may be best to visit your closest hospital. If you suspect you may have broken your jaw or you have sustained a head injury, go straight to the Emergency Department at your local hospital. You can find your closest Emergency Department to you in Adelaide (including wait times) here. At Smile Society, we offer an out-of-hours emergency dental clinic in Adelaide, but we are not a 24-hour emergency dentist.
